After the sensational win for Switzerland in the premilary round, nobody really expected the
hosts to do it a second time. On the other hand, they had the incredible home crowd in the arena
sold out with 7200 spectators.
Finland tried to put pressure on the Swiss, but did not find many chances to shoot on Daniel
Streit's goal. The Swiss team had some chances to get the lead, so it was quite surprising that
Finland got the lead with their first real chance in the 7th minute. Finland scored a second one
and after Switzerland shot their first goal, they advanced to 3-1. Another goal for Switzerland,
but Finland stroke back short before period break. At the end, the teams went with a 4-2 score
for Finland into the first break.
At the beginning of second half, Switzerland scored a goal in power play and even managed to tie
the score in 35th minute. No one would have expected Switzerland to strike back after Finland shot
three in a row which gave them a 7-4 lead at the beginning of third period, but Switzerlands Hofbauer
brothers played really great and lead their team to the comeback, which ended in the 7-7 tieing
goal by Matthias Hofbauer in the 59th minute.
The overtime started with a huge bang, when Christoph Hofbauer hit the goal cage. The more the
overtime took, the more you could see how nervous both teams were getting and how much they just
did not want to commit the final, decising mistake. So the match had to be decided by penalty shootout, the first
one in Floorball World Cup history.
Switzerland substituted their goalie, but Roger Tönz had no chance against Tähkä, Kohonen and
Karppanen, whereas Henri Toivoniemi beat his first two Swiss opponents. Matthias Hofbauer got
the third one and held Switzerland in the shootout, but Koskelainen also put the ball in the
net and won the match for his country.
What a great floorball match, an incredible dramatic fight between two great teams. Of course,
none of them deserved to loose that match, which was a great show to promote floorball.
