Majoly De Wilde (BEL) - Nandita Krishnan (IND) 6:4 6:3

My original fanclub onsite report from www.sports-india.com:

Watching that Belgium girl warming up with Nandita, you could really see that this will be a tough task for our girl. De Wilde played very flat, powerful topspin strokes, whereas Nandita looked a bit nervous and slightly less confident than on Sunday.

And that was the way the match started: De Wilde had no problem to win her serve, whereas Nandita was 0-30 behind in the second game followed by two double faults: 2:0 de Wilde. Majoly had no problem to raise the lead to 3:0 and had a double break point at 15-40 while Nandita served. But Nandita fought back, decreased the number of errors and showed some of her beautiful strokes which caused Litfin to struggle the day before. Deuce, three time Ad In, Game Krishnan! Still 1:3 for Nandita, but I was much more confident now. Majoly seemed to be impressed now, too, and struggled with her serve. 0-40, triple break point for Nandita. She took the first one, she was back in the game and to serve at 2:3 now. Unfortunately, she committed a double fault after loosing the first point. Though she could win the next one, she was still under pressure at 15-30, when Majoly showed one of her beautiful forehand topspin shots. Double break point, Nandita shot the ball in the net, 4:2 de Wilde. The next game looked a bit like the ones at the beginning, where Majoly forced Nandita to several errors, but Nandita always found a way to come back: after she had no chance to re-break, she showed great points at own serve, so that De Wilde served for the set at 5:3. Nandita lead 0-30 in that game, but was unable to go for break points - four points in a row for the Belgium girl and the set. Majoly was definitely the better player in that set and just too strong for Ramesh's daughter, but nevertheless I was very pleased with Nandita. She showed that she is able how to change her game and strokes to keep up with the opponent - things like this as well as gaining experience with different players with different styles of play is much more important than to gain good results, to win or to loose.

After the servers had no major problems in the first two games of the second set, Nandita put herself under pressure by a double fault in the third one. A great return by De Wilde at 15-30 gave her another double break point, she converted the first one. But again, Nandita did not give up and broke De Wildes's serve straight and had no problem to win at own serve. If there was something, in which Nandita was better than De Wilde that day, it was definitely the mental strength - Nandita put much pressure on her opponent now who seemed to be very impressed and nervous because of Nandita's streak. 15-40, double break point for Nandita. After her first return hit the net, Nandita converted the second one by a beautiful return winner. 4:2 now for Nandita, she even seemed to be able to turn the match, though her opponent still seemed to be gifted with the better skills. Unfortunately, Nandita got nervous now, too, and was 0-40 behind at own serve. Though she saved the first break point, she committed a double fault and as Majoly had no problems with her serve, the score was 4:4 tied again. Again, a double fault put Nandita under pressure, two nice points by the Belgium girl meaned double break point, first one converted, 5:4 De Wilde, who served for the match now. But Nandita did not give up, whereas De Wilde had major problems with her serve. Though she did not commit a double fault, she just hit one first serve! That gave Nandita a great chance to come back, she had a first break point at 30-40, but was unlucky as a net chord jumped up high, so that Nandita's following shot was too long. After a first match point, she had three more break points, but De Wilde always found the right answer and gave Nandita no chance to come back. She deserved to win and converted the second match point afterwards.

Wow, this was a great match on a very high level, especially for a class 3 tournament qualifying draw! Some European countries just started their summer holidays, in other countries like Germany, many pupils finished their exams, nothing really happens at school, so it is quite easy for them to be allowed to skip school for a sport event like that. The worst thing about Nandita's loss is definitely that she did not have a chance to play another match and gain more experience. I think she learned much, she never gave up, so I am very pleased with her match. De Wilde was too strong for her and she gave her an impressing fight.
