Luxembourg - Portugal: Gilles Muller - Rui Machado 7:6(2) 7:6(3) 6:1

After the doubles match, Portugal needed to win the fourth rubber to tie the score and force a fifth match-decision. Thus, Machado, who was definitely supposed to be the underdog against local hero Muller, needed to put huge pressure on his opponent to get him into trouble.
And this was exactly what Machado did: in Muller's second and third serve game, he had an overall of five break points - but he wasted all of them. Muller had his best chance to decide the first set in the eigth game, when he was not able to convert one of three break points against the Portuguese serve. As most of the other games were easy wins for the server, the first set went into the tie-breaker, in which Muller surprinsingly started to dominate.
Second set was quite similar to the first one. Muller broke Machado in the first game, but Machado re-broke him in the fourth one. In the sixth game, Muller first saved three break points after being 0:40 behind, but he made two double faults afterwards. Thus, Machado was in the lead again and served for the set at the score of 5:3. After a set point for Portugal, Muller made three points in a row and re-broke Machado. Again, it was time for the tie-break, and again, Machado was much weaker in it, too.
The guest player completely lost his spirit in the third set and got outpowered by Muller. Machado wasted great chances in first and second set to make the sensation - but instead, Muller had an easy-looking three-set win on the scoreboard at the end of the match, which made his country's team advance to the second round, in which Luxemburg will face Italy abroad.
